For an outside observer, someone seeking truth, or a Christian who is a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Christianity comes down to one central question: Who is Jesus?
The Gospel of John begins by explaining who Jesus is. John 1:1-5 says this:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were
made; that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of
all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (NIV).
These verses give us a theological view of who Jesus is. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke tell the story of Jesus being born on earth and how that came to be. But, John precedes that and speaks of who Jesus was before He was born in Bethlehem.
We know that the Word spoken of in John 1:1 is Jesus because John 1:14 identifies the Word for us: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (NIV). The Word is the incarnate God. That is, God who put on flesh to come live in this world. His name is Jesus.
Since we know that the Word is Jesus, we can decipher from the first few verses of John who Jesus is. We see that Jesus was “in the beginning.” Before creation, Jesus was around. He has always been. He is eternal.
Next, John writes the truth that fully describes Jesus as the difference maker in this life. “And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John states that Jesus is God. He is part of the triune God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God the Son is Jesus. Every attribute that God the Father has, God the Son has as well. And, everything that God the Father deserves, God the Son deserves as well: praise, honor, worship, glory. Jesus is God.
Jesus played a vital role in creation. Then, Jesus brings life and light into this creation for all mankind (see John 1:4). This light shines so that we who were mired in the darkness of being fallen because of sin can see truth, receive grace, and experience salvation. Jesus is the One bringing that light into this dark world.
Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son, God in the flesh, light of the world, Savior who comes and dies for our sin. If we are going to understand who Jesus is, we have to listen to the source of authority and truth, the Bible. There is no doubt that the Bible proclaims that Jesus is God. That truth is clear throughout Scripture, and it is abundantly clear in John 1.
Some have great difficulty with believing that Jesus is God. We, as Christians, have to remember that we are not the ones making this claim. The Bible is. In fact, Jesus Himself makes that same claim several times in His ministry.
Who is Jesus? He is God come to earth to save us from our sins.
