Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian organization that strives to share the love of Jesus Christ by meeting physical and spiritual needs around the world. The mission statement of Samaritan’s Purse is the following:
To follow the example of Christ by helping those in need and
proclaiming the hope of the Gospel.
The organization seeks to impact the world with the good news of Jesus Christ by meeting the needs of people and sharing the gospel with those people. Samaritan’s Purse was founded in 1970 by Bob Pierce by God answering his prayer that said: “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” This prayer led to the start of a ministry that desired “to meet emergency needs in crisis areas through existing evangelical mission agencies and national churches.” Pierce desired to come alongside of Christians who were caring for the poor and helping those suffering with support and encouragement. In 1973, Pierce met a young Christian who had a growing heart for missions around the world, Franklin Graham. A year after Bob Pierce died of leukemia in 1978, Franklin Graham took over the leadership role of Samaritan’s Purse.
Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse Ministry has expanded to include many different areas of ministry. Probably best known for the Operation Christmas Child ministry of carrying shoeboxes filled with simple Christmas gifts around the world, many other ministries are performed throughout the year and around the world. From construction projects and medical clinics to children’s and women’s care, Samaritan’s Purse touches many people with practical aid and spiritual truth. The organization is also ready to respond to any emergency around the world with its International Emergency Relief efforts. Further, Samaritan’s Purse impacts the poorest nations around the world by teaching the locals how to care for crops and animals for food and how to provide clean, healthy drinking water for the communities. So much of what the organization strives to do is to meet the many physical needs of people by teaching them how they can do the work, grow the crops, and tend the animals themselves.
Samaritan’s Purse is always looking for people to help out with the ministries provided throughout the world. That help may come in the form of packing a shoebox for a child at Christmas or donating money to particular relief efforts. Or, that help may come by volunteers traveling on medical or constructions teams to where the help is actually needed. Through it all the ministry depends on the prayers and faithful financial support of Christians who believe in the work and ministry that Samaritan’s Purse is doing.
Through the various ministry efforts, the labor, gifts, prayers, and concern of many are being translated into an incredible picture of what the gospel of Jesus is about: showing the love of Christ through helping and sharing the love of Christ through teaching and discipleship. Samaritan’s Purse strives to emulate the model of the Good Samaritan that Jesus describes in Luke 10.
